How the Hijri calendar calculator works
Pick a direction at the top of the tool.
- Gregorian → Hijri: enter a Gregorian date between 1882 and 2174. The result shows the Hijri day, month and year, the weekday, the date in numeric form (day/month/year), the Gregorian date written out, and the number of days in that Hijri month.
- Hijri → Gregorian: choose the Hijri day and month and type a year from 1300 to 1600. The result shows the Gregorian date, the weekday, the ISO form (year-month-day), the Hijri date written out and the length of the month.
The conversion uses the Umm al-Qura tables built into modern browsers, so it runs entirely on your device. If your browser is too old to include them, the tool says so rather than showing a wrong date.

Why Hijri and Gregorian dates drift apart
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Its months have 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. A Hijri date therefore falls about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, and a person’s Hijri age grows a little faster than their Gregorian age. There is no simple fixed offset between the two calendars, which is why a Hijri calendar calculator looks up each month instead of adding a number of years.
Common uses
- Converting a Hijri date of birth on an official document to its Gregorian equivalent, or the reverse.
- Checking which weekday a historical Hijri date fell on.
- Planning around a Hijri date in a contract, a residence permit or a school calendar.
- Finding out whether a month has 29 or 30 days before counting days within it.
Good to know
- Umm al-Qura is computed in advance from astronomical criteria and is the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia. Many other countries start months after moon sighting, so their dates can differ by a day; dates of Islamic occasions are always expected, never confirmed in advance.
- For today’s date, see today’s Hijri date, which also lists the next Islamic occasions.
- To work out an age on both calendars, calculate your age and tick the option to show the Hijri age.
- Months are listed in order: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Akhir, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Akhirah, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah.
