How today’s Hijri date is shown
The panel at the top gives the Hijri day, month and year, the weekday and today’s Gregorian date. It also shows the date in numeric form (day/month/year), the number of days in the current Hijri month, how far you are into the month and into the Hijri year, and the days left in each.
The page is generated with the date for a reference time zone, then your browser recalculates everything with your own clock. If it is already tomorrow where you are, the panel shows tomorrow’s Hijri date.
The Umm al-Qura calendar
Chronira uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia. It is calculated in advance from astronomical criteria, so every date can be known years ahead. Countries that start their months by local moon sighting, for example Morocco, can be one day behind. Each country’s official announcement always takes precedence.
The twelve Hijri months
| No. | Month | No. | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Muharram | 7 | Rajab |
| 2 | Safar | 8 | Sha’ban |
| 3 | Rabi al-Awwal | 9 | Ramadan |
| 4 | Rabi al-Akhir (Rabi al-Thani) | 10 | Shawwal |
| 5 | Jumada al-Ula | 11 | Dhu al-Qadah |
| 6 | Jumada al-Akhirah | 12 | Dhu al-Hijjah |
The Hijri calendar is lunar and counts its years from the Hijra in 622 CE, which is why years are written with “AH”. Each month has 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year. As a result, Ramadan, the two Eids and every other Islamic occasion arrive about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
Upcoming Islamic occasions
Below the date you will find the next occasions of the Hijri year, such as the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, the Day of Arafah (9 Dhu al-Hijjah), Eid al-Adha (10 Dhu al-Hijjah), the Islamic New Year (1 Muharram) and Ashura (10 Muharram), each with its Gregorian date and the number of days to go. These dates are marked as expected: they come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, and the official date depends on the moon-sighting announcement in each country, which may differ by a day.
Good to know
- To check another day, convert Hijri and Gregorian dates in either direction, from 1300 to 1600 AH.
- The age calculator can also calculate your age on the Hijri calendar, which is useful because a Hijri year is shorter: someone born on 1 January 2000 was 26 Gregorian years old on 6 October 2026, but already 27 Hijri years old.
- The numeric form is written day/month/year, for example 26/04/1448 for 26 Rabi al-Akhir 1448.
