How the business days calculator works
The tool has two modes.
Add business days starts from a date and moves forward or backward by the number of working days you enter. The start date itself is never counted, so the first business day is the next working day. Below the result you can see how many calendar days that covers, how many weekend days were skipped and which holidays fell in the period.
Count business days gives the number of working days between a start date and an end date. The start date is excluded by default and the end date is included, which is the usual way to count working days still to come. Tick Count the start date to include both ends.
In both modes you choose the weekend days, an optional set of public holidays and any extra days off. Weekend days are checked first, so a holiday on a Saturday or Sunday counts once, as a weekend day.
Public holidays
- United States (federal holidays): the 11 federal holidays, such as Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, on their observed dates (Saturday → Friday before, Sunday → Monday after). States and employers may observe a different list.
- France (public holidays): the 11 public holidays listed in the French Labour Code (art. L3133-1). Alsace-Moselle adds Good Friday and 26 December, which you can add as extra days off.
Use Extra days off for anything else: a company closure, a regional holiday or a bridge day.
Examples
| Calculation | Settings | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Monday 2 November 2026 + 4 business days | Saturday–Sunday weekend | Friday 6 November 2026 |
| Friday 18 December 2026 + 10 business days | No holidays | Friday 1 January 2027 |
| Friday 18 December 2026 + 10 business days | US federal holidays | Tuesday 5 January 2027 |
| Thursday 5 November 2026 + 3 business days | Friday–Saturday weekend | Tuesday 10 November 2026 |
| Count 1 June → 30 June 2026 | No holidays | 21 business days |
| Count 1 June → 30 June 2026 | US federal holidays | 20 business days (Juneteenth, Friday 19 June) |
In the December example with US holidays, the calculator skips Christmas Day (Friday 25 December) and New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January), along with three weekends: 18 calendar days in total.
For France, counting from 30 April to 31 May 2026 gives 17 business days: May 2026 has 21 weekdays, and four of them are public holidays (1 May, 8 May, Ascension on 14 May and Whit Monday on 25 May).
Common uses
- Working out a delivery date or a payment term such as “net 10 business days”.
- Counting the working days left in a month or before a project deadline.
- Planning leave: how many working days a week off actually uses.
- Checking a notice period expressed in working days.
Good to know
- Contracts and laws sometimes define business days differently, for example by counting Saturday as a working day. Check the wording that applies to you and adjust the weekend days to match.
- To count every calendar day instead, count the days between two dates, or add or subtract days from a date.
- Holiday dates are calculated from the rules in the official lists: French public holidays and US federal holidays.
