How the Halloween countdown works
Halloween has a fixed date, 31 October, so the countdown is simple calendar arithmetic. The clock counts down to midnight at the start of 31 October using your device’s time zone. The page first shows a figure computed for a reference time zone, then your browser recalculates it with your own clock and updates the days, hours, minutes and seconds every second. Nothing you do on the page is sent to a server.
The line under the clock gives whole calendar days left, not counting today, so on 30 October it reads 1 day. On 31 October the page says Halloween is today, and from 1 November it counts to the next one, 364 days away (365 when a 29 February falls in between). The key dates panel shows the full date with its weekday.
How many days until Halloween from a given date
These counts are the same every year, because August, September and October always have 31, 30 and 31 days:
| From | Arithmetic | Days until Halloween |
|---|---|---|
| 1 August | 30 (rest of August) + 30 (September) + 31 | 91 |
| 1 September | 29 (rest of September) + 31 | 60 |
| 1 October | 31 − 1 | 30 |
| 24 October | 31 − 24 | 7 |
For any other pair of dates, you can count the days between two dates.
Halloween weekdays, 2026 to 2030
| Year | Halloween |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Saturday 31 October |
| 2027 | Sunday 31 October |
| 2028 | Tuesday 31 October |
| 2029 | Wednesday 31 October |
| 2030 | Thursday 31 October |
When Halloween falls on a weekday, parties and events are sometimes held on the weekend before, so the date you are really counting down to may be a different one.
A short history
The word Halloween is a shortened form of All Hallows’ Eve: the evening before All Saints’ Day (also called All Hallows’ Day) on 1 November. Many of its customs are often traced back to Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter. Over time, traditions such as dressing up, carved lanterns and going door to door mixed together into the Halloween celebrated today, especially in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
Planning tips
- Party at a set time. The countdown above targets the start of the day. To count down to a party at 7 pm, or to the weekend before Halloween, create a countdown to any date and time and share the link with your guests.
- Costumes and decorations. Knowing how many days until Halloween helps you order costumes or materials early enough for delivery.
- The next holiday. Once Halloween is over, the Thanksgiving countdown picks up for US readers.
