How the Christmas countdown clock works
The clock counts down to midnight at the very start of 25 December, using the time zone set on your device. The first figure on the page is worked out for a reference time zone when the page is built; your browser then recalculates it with your own clock and updates the days, hours, minutes and seconds every second. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Under the clock, a line gives the number of whole calendar days left, not counting today. On Christmas Eve that line reads 1 day, while the clock itself shows the hours and minutes left until midnight. On 25 December the page says Christmas is today, and from 26 December it starts counting to the next one.
The key dates panel lists Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, each with its weekday, so you can see at a glance whether the holiday falls on a weekend.
How many days till Christmas: worked examples
October, November and December always have 31, 30 and 31 days, so these counts are the same every year:
| From | Arithmetic | Days until Christmas |
|---|---|---|
| 1 October | 30 (rest of October) + 30 (November) + 25 | 85 |
| 1 November | 29 (rest of November) + 25 | 54 |
| 1 December | 25 − 1 | 24 |
| 24 December (Christmas Eve) | 25 − 24 | 1 |
If you want to know how many days until Christmas from any other date, the countdown above answers it for today, and you can count the days between two dates for any pair of dates.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 2026 to 2030
| Year | Christmas Eve | Christmas Day |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Thursday 24 December | Friday 25 December |
| 2027 | Friday 24 December | Saturday 25 December |
| 2028 | Sunday 24 December | Monday 25 December |
| 2029 | Monday 24 December | Tuesday 25 December |
| 2030 | Tuesday 24 December | Wednesday 25 December |
Christmas moves forward by one weekday each year, and by two when a 29 February falls in between: it jumps from Saturday in 2027 to Monday in 2028 because 2028 is a leap year.
Planning the run-up to Christmas
A Christmas countdown clock is handy for more than excitement. A few practical ideas:
- Posting and delivery deadlines. Postal services and couriers publish their own last dates for Christmas delivery; check yours and set a countdown to any date and time for that deadline.
- Working days before the break. If you need to finish a project before the holidays, the business days calculator counts the working days left, excluding weekends and, optionally, public holidays.
- Advent. Many Advent calendars run from 1 to 24 December, one door per day of the final 24-day countdown.
Good to know
- In many countries, especially in parts of Europe, the main family celebration and the exchange of presents take place on the evening of 24 December rather than on Christmas Day.
- Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar for their feasts celebrate Christmas on 7 January. The date shown here is always 25 December in the Gregorian calendar.
- All dates are pure calendar arithmetic, with no estimates involved.
