How to use the abbreviation list

Type into Filter abbreviations to narrow the table. You can search by the abbreviation itself (CET), part of a name (Pacific) or an offset (+5:30). The table shows four things for every entry:

  • Abbreviation: the short code, such as EST or JST.
  • Name: the full name, such as Eastern Standard Time.
  • Offset: the UTC offset the abbreviation stands for.
  • Regions: where it is used, plus a flag when it is a daylight time, used only in summer.

The By region chips open shorter lists for one part of the world, such as Europe, or the military time zone letters.

The same letters, different zones

Time zone abbreviations are not standardized, and several are shared by zones that are hours apart:

Abbreviation Possible meanings
CST Central Standard Time (UTC−6), China Standard Time (UTC+8), Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5)
IST India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), Irish Standard Time (UTC+1), Israel Standard Time (UTC+2)
AST Atlantic Standard Time (UTC−4), Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3)
BST British Summer Time (UTC+1), Bangladesh Standard Time (UTC+6)

That is why a meeting invitation for “10:00 CST” can go wrong. For anything important, give a UTC offset (10:00 UTC−6) or a place name. Software uses IANA zone names such as America/Chicago or Asia/Shanghai, which are unambiguous and also carry the daylight saving rules. If you need the offset of a particular city right now, the time zone converter or the world clock shows it with daylight saving time applied.

Standard time and daylight time

Many abbreviations come in pairs. The S in EST or CST stands for standard time, used in winter, and the D in EDT or CDT for daylight time, used in summer, one hour later. In Europe the summer forms usually add an S for summer: CET becomes CEST and EET becomes EEST. Some people write EST all year when they really mean the local time in New York; strictly, EST is always UTC−5. See daylight saving time for when each region switches.

Military time zone letters

The military and aviation world uses single letters, each with a phonetic name. Alpha (A) to Mike (M) cover UTC+1 to UTC+12, with J skipped. November (N) to Yankee (Y) cover UTC−1 to UTC−12. Zulu (Z) is UTC+0, which is why UTC is often called Zulu time. The letter J, Juliett, is used for the observer’s local time rather than a fixed zone.

Frequently asked questions

What does CST stand for?

Most often Central Standard Time, UTC−6, used in central North America in winter. It is also used for China Standard Time (UTC+8) and Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5), so check the context or ask for the UTC offset.

Why do some zones have two abbreviations?

Places that observe daylight saving time use one abbreviation in winter and another in summer. New York switches between EST (UTC−5) and EDT (UTC−4), London between GMT (UTC+0) and BST (UTC+1).

Who decides time zone abbreviations?

Nobody, officially. Governments set offsets and clock change rules, but the abbreviations are conventions that grew up in each country. The IANA time zone database records commonly used ones, and some zones have none at all, so the database simply shows the offset, such as +04.

What is Zulu time?

Zulu is the military letter Z, meaning UTC+0. A time written as 1400Z is 14:00 Coordinated Universal Time, the same moment everywhere on Earth.
