How to read the count
The large number is the Days left in the year, not counting today. Under it, a live countdown shows the time until midnight on 31 December in hours, minutes and seconds. The progress bar fills as the year goes by, and the line below it says which day of the year today is, as Day N of 365, or of 366 in a leap year.
The figures underneath break the time down further:
- Weeks left: the days left as whole weeks plus the remaining days.
- Hours left: the hours until the end of 31 December.
- Weekdays left: Monday to Friday, counted from tomorrow to 31 December.
- Weekends left: the Saturdays and Sundays in the same period.
- Year completed: the share of the year already passed, as a percentage.
Everything updates every second from your device’s clock, in your own time zone.
Counting days in the year
Counting days left sounds simple, but there are two common ways to do it. This page counts the days after today, so on 1 January of a common year there are 364 days left and on 30 December there is 1. Other counts include today, which adds one. When comparing numbers, check which method was used.
| Date (common year) | Day of year | Days left |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | 1 | 364 |
| 1 July | 182 | 183 |
| 1 December | 335 | 30 |
| 31 December | 365 | 0 |
In a leap year, every date from 1 March onward is one day later in the year, and the counts from 1 January to 28 February are one day higher.
Weekdays and public holidays
The weekday count includes every Monday to Friday, including public holidays, because holidays differ by country and region. To count real working days between two dates, with holidays removed, use the business days calculator. To count the days between any two dates, use days between dates.
Counting down to something else
For a countdown to New Year’s Eve at midnight, with fireworks, see the New Year countdown. To count down to any date and time you choose, use the countdown timer, and to see which ISO week it is, check the week number.
