Classroom timer

This classroom timer gives the whole room a large, visual countdown that you can project full screen. Pick a preset such as Group work or Silent reading, or set any length in minutes and seconds.

10:00

10 minute timer

The screen stays on while the timer runs, where supported.

How to use the classroom timer

  1. Choose a preset, such as Group work · 15 min, or type the minutes and seconds and press Set the timer.
  2. Press Full screen so the countdown fills the projector or interactive whiteboard.
  3. Press Start. The button changes to Pause and then Resume if you need to stop for a question.
  4. Use +1 min to extend the activity and Reset to put the full time back.

When time is up, the clock shows “Time’s up!” and a short alarm plays. The countdown is calculated from a fixed end time, so it stays exact even if you switch to your slides in another tab. Where the browser supports it, the screen stays on while the timer runs.

Why a visual timer helps

Many students, especially younger ones, cannot yet judge how long “five more minutes” is. The ring around the digits empties as time passes, so children can see at a glance whether they are near the start or the end of an activity, without reading the numbers. A visible countdown also cuts down on “How long is left?” questions and makes transitions calmer, because the end of an activity is expected rather than sudden.

Preset lengths and ideas

Think-pair-share 3 min Thinking alone, then sharing with a partner

Group work 15 min Projects, stations, discussions
Silent reading 20 min Independent reading, journaling
Test 30 min Tests and timed writing

Tips for younger students

  • Say the time out loud when you start, and point to the ring so students link the shrinking color to the time left.
  • Give a warning with a minute or two to go, so nobody is surprised by the alarm.
  • Keep it short. Several 5-minute blocks often work better than one long block for young children.
  • Check the volume before class so the alarm is heard but does not startle anyone.

For other lengths, try the 5 minute timer or the 45 minute timer for a full class period. To structure study time with breaks, use the Pomodoro timer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show the timer on the projector or whiteboard?

Open the page on the computer connected to the projector and press Full screen. Only the big digits and the progress ring remain, so students can read the time left from the back of the room. Press Exit full screen or Esc to return.

What presets are included?

Clean-up (2 min), Think-pair-share (3 min), Brain break (5 min), Quiz (10 min), Group work (15 min), Silent reading (20 min) and Test (30 min). The timer opens set to 10 minutes, and you can type any other length.

Can I turn off the alarm sound?

Yes. Press the Alarm sound button to switch the sound off or on; your choice is remembered in this browser. When the sound is off, the clock still shows Time's up! at the end.

Can I add time if students need longer?

Yes. Press +1 min at any time, even while the timer is running or just after it ends, to give a little extra time without starting over.
