How the birthday countdown works
Choose your birth month and day. The countdown starts immediately and shows:
- the days, hours, minutes and seconds left, updated every second;
- the number of days left in words;
- the weekday and full date of your next birthday.
If your birthday has already passed this year, the countdown moves to next year. On the day itself the page tells you it is today. Impossible dates such as 31 April or 30 February are rejected; 29 February is accepted.
How many days until my birthday? Worked examples
These examples show the arithmetic behind the count, from a given “today”:
| Today | Birthday | Days left |
|---|---|---|
| 7 October | 14 November | 38 days |
| 20 December 2026 | 3 March | 73 days |
| 1 February 2027 | 29 February | 27 days (to 28 February 2027, a common year) |
| 1 March 2027 | 29 February | 365 days (to 29 February 2028, a leap year) |
First line: 7 October to 31 October is 24 days, plus 14 days in November, gives 38. Second line: 11 days to the end of December, 31 in January, 28 in February 2027 and 3 in March: 11 + 31 + 28 + 3 = 73.
Leap-day birthdays
People born on 29 February only see their exact date in leap years. In other years, the countdown targets 28 February and says so under the clock. Conventions differ by country, and some people prefer 1 March; the age calculator can use either.
Common uses
- Checking how long is left before your birthday, or a friend’s.
- Planning a party or a surprise with the exact weekday in mind.
- Sharing a link that counts down to someone’s birthday: the link carries only the month and day, after the # in the address, which browsers never send to servers.
Good to know
- The countdown uses your device’s clock and time zone, so it ends at local midnight wherever you are.
- For any other event, create a countdown to any date with your own name, date and time.
- To find your exact age in years, months and days, calculate your age from your date of birth.
