New Year’s Day (January 1), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Veterans Day (November 11) and Christmas Day (December 25), which have fixed dates;
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (third Monday of January), Washington’s Birthday (third Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Labor Day (first Monday of September) and Columbus Day (second Monday of October);
Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday of November.
Fixed-date holidays move to the nearest weekday when they fall on a weekend. That is why a federal holiday can appear on a Friday or a Monday next to its usual date, and why New Year’s Day of 2027 shows up on December 31, 2026 whenever January 1, 2027 is a Saturday. The list follows the Office of Personnel Management; state holidays and company days off are not included.
